Busy June

June is looking like a crazy month.

Our library is hosting LOEX of the West beginning June 4th. I’m on the planning committee and will be tech support, so I’ll be heavily involved.

I begin teaching a class for the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University starting June 2. I’m teaching a Resources and Information Services course focusing on film and media. The class is entirely online, so I will not be driving back and forth between Vegas and San Jose.

CineVegas begins June 12th. I hope to get to some of it. I’m not quite as excited about this film festival as I have about others. Part of the fun of going to the festivals in places like Philadelphia or Toronto is traveling around and getting to different areas and taking breaks at different restaurants. CineVegas is mainly at the Palms Casino Resort.

Finally, the American Library Association conference is at the end of the month, and I will be driving out to Anaheim for the long weekend.

Computers in Libraries 2008 Schedule

Two weeks from tomorrow, I leave for glorious Crystal City, VA for Computers in Libraries 2008. I posted my tentative schedule on the CiL wiki. I will be presenting about learning commons on Monday afternoon, my 2nd time presenting at CiL. I always look forward to the great presentations at CiL, but this year, I am particularly excited about Steven Cohen’s track on Monday. I won’t be able to go to all of it because I present on Monday as well, but I should get to the morning sessions. I’m also excited that there are two other presentations about innovative spaces, Barbara Tierney’s “The Library Sandbox” and Matt Gullett and Greg Schwartz’s “Libraries as Laboratories for Innovation,” both on Tuesday.

After the conference, I’ll be taking the train (oh, I miss trains) to Philadelphia to visit family, hit some of the Philadelphia Film Festival, and even squeeze in a Phillies game.

Other Film Festivals

Instead of feeling sorry for myself because I’m not at TIFF, I decided to start putting together a list of film festivals. I’ve gone only to TIFF and the Philadelphia Film Festival, so now that I’m in the southwest, I may take the opportunity to get to some festivals that would have been too much of a trip from the east coast. I’m not limited the list by what’s in striking distance of Vegas (but in the U.S.), but I am limiting it to festivals that seem not to be specialized (e.g. The Bicycle Film Festival). This list is also by no means exhaustive. Just a list of festivals that caught my eye.

This site has been getting a lot of hits from people looking for TIFF. If anyone has any experience going to these festivals or can recommend anything not on the list, I’d appreciate your comments.
