A Film Unfinished is an absolutely fascinating documentary about the discovery of an incomplete film created by the Nazis that documented life in the Warsaw Ghetto. At first, this footage seemed as if it could have been a historically valuable primary resource until a second reel was discovered that showed alternate takes of many of the scenes proving that many of the details were staged. In addition, the journal of the Jewish manager for the ghetto was discovered giving even more details about the process. A transcript of the testimony of one of the camerman is dramatized to provide even greater insights. However, the purpose of the original footage remains a mystery.

Many of the staged scenes creates a portrait of life that hid much of the deprevation of the ghetto. The Jewish captives were shown to be better dressed, better fed, and more content than was the case. They were also forced to appear uncaring and cold toward the poorer population. These staged scenes could have served as propeganda to make the camps seem not as cruel to the outside world and to cast the character of the Jews in an unflattering light. However, much of the raw footage did indeed capture the true deprevation of the ghetto raising the question as to why the Nazis would want the true nature of the camps to be exposed.

A Film Unfinsihed presents much of the raw footage and the alternate takes as it creates a mesmerizing narrative about the discovery of the films and of the process of the filmmaking.

On the surface, Mugabe and the White African is about Mike Campbell’s fight to protect his land from being illegally taken from him by the corrupt Mugabe government of Zimbabwe. Campbell had purchased his farm legally. Mugabe began a plan of redistributing land to poor black farmers. Campbell, his family and his workers had been threatened and physically abused when they tried to fight against this land grab. Campbell brought his case to a regional African court and won.

This straight-forward legal battle was, of course, complicated by a subtext of racial tension because Mugabe was redistributing land only owned by white farmers. The story is further complicated by the long history of colonialism. Although Campbell obtained his land legally, his farm was resented by many in the community. The tale is even further complicated by the accusation that Mugabe was not actually redistributing land to poor farmers but to his cronies.

It could be easy to assume Mugabe and the White African is the tale of a white Englishman who faced reverse racism. But the film is much more than that as it raises many issues that are too complex to resolve. However, it’s hard to say whether or not this strategy works in favor of the film. The main focus is on Campell, his son-in-law and his son-in-law’s parents in England. There is some footage of Mugabe’s legal team and the men trying to occupy the farm. Oddly, the film does not present any interviews with any of the black farm workers whose insights could have gone a long way to providing some context for the racial issues.

The Price of Sex is a disturbing look into the world of human trafficking of Eastern European women. Filmmaker Mimi Chakarova interviews current and former victims, clients and anti-trafficking activists. She also goes undercover with a hidden camera to one of the clubs where women have been forced into prostitution and films major streets where these women solicit clients, often the local police. Such first hand accounts and primary footage give The Price of Sex a palpable sense of danger.

The film also provides unique insight into the fall of Communism which led to the harsh economic climate that made these women vulnerable to the tactics of the traffickers. Often, Chakarova laments how things were better under Communism and takes the viewer to her all but abandoned hometown.

For My Wife is a moving film by and about Charlene Strong whose partner lost her life during an intense storm. Charlene was denied access to Kate’s hospital room without first securing permission from her partner’s next of kin. In addition, she was later dismissed by the funeral director who would not recognize the important role of Charlene in Kate’s life. After these events, Charlene fought to change the legal system to secure more rights for gay and lesbian couples so that the same barriers would not be faced by other people.

The first half of the film focuses on the initial tragedy and legal battle. The second half revolves around Charlene’s continuing advocacy and the stories of other people who faced similar discrimination.

Despite the importance of the issues raised and Charlene’s emotional story, For My Wife is not consistently engaging. Even with a relatively short 60 minute running time, the film drags in spots and is a bit repetitive.

However, the film is overlong (over 2 hours) and does not provide sufficient unique insights to warrent the running time. Judicious editing could have made this a tight and engaging film, but, as it is, The Interrupters feels repetitive to the point of undermining the importance of the story.

Both deal with civil rights issues in the 1960′s. Stonewall Uprising deals with a police raid on the popular gay bar, Stonewall Inn. Freedom Riders tells the story of a group of white and black Americans who traveled by bus together into the segregated south. Both stories are moving, tragic and ultimately triumphant sparking much needed social change.

On the surface, War, Love God and Madness is about filmmaker Mohamed Al-Daradji who is trying to make the first film in Iraq by an Iraqi filmmaker in 13 years. However, the film is much more about what life was like during the initial years of the US occupation. Through much of the early part of the documentary, the making of the film seems to take a backseat to stories of people’s everyday lives as Al-Daradji tries to assemble the talent needed for his production. As the work takes off in earnest, the filmmakers encounter a tragedy that nearly derails the project.

War, Love, God and Madness seems to meander in the first half, but the diverse elements all contribute to a deeper understanding of the tragedy that is to follow. Because the production is taking place under such stressful conditions, War, Love, God and Madness is suspenseful in ways most documentaries aren’t and is an excellent example of guerrilla filmmaking.

Louder Than a Bomb is a perfectly fine documentary about students from four Chicago area high schools competing in a spoken word poetry competition. Although interesting, the film suffers from familiarity. School kids taking part in competitions have been done plenty of times before and Louder Than a Bomb follows similar patterns: the introduction of the students, the preparation, the competition itself. The students as well fall into expected roles: the underdog, the ones from the school that won before and who want to reclaim their title, the crowd favorite. In fact, these patterns were strong enough that some of the students feel like stereotypes and become cloying to watch. There is comfort in these familiar patterns and Louder Than a Bomb would be enjoyable in the right context, but it doesn’t offer anything new enough or unique enough to push it to the top of my list.

The best thing about Top Secret Rosies is that it sheds light on the fact that there were women recuited as mathematicians during World War II. Beyond that, this doc, which clocks in at just about an hour, feels slight. That there were women serving in this capacity is an interesting contrast to the popular image of Rosie the Riveter; however, the film does little other than expose this fact and revisit the idea that women were given opportunities during the war that were stripped from them after the war ended. Oddly, the film spends a significant amount of time interviewing some men who were involved in the computing projects.

Not surprisingly, the four years I’ve spent watching films for the Notable Videos for Adults Committee has involved plenty of documentaries about the environment and this year has been no different. I have already watched eight films dealing explicitly or implicitly with environmental concerns. Gasland, about the dangers of environmental fracking, definitely falls into the explict category.

Gasland relates numerous stories of people living in Pennsylvania, Wyoming and Colorado who have felt the impact of the fracking process. The film also documents how restrictions have been loosened to allow coroporations to quickly establish new drilling locations. Gasland invites comparisons to the equally engaging and moving Split Estate, including, if my memory is correct, interviews with some of the same people and footage of one of the incidents in which one of the residents sets part of a creek on fire.

Gasland relies a bit heavily on the anecdotal evidence presented by the people affected, which raises some concerns about actual cause and effect. The film’s website has a helpful document affirming the research presented, but I wish more expert opinion was given in the film. That said, Gasland is a disturbing introduction for those who may not be familiar with the process of fracking.
