The Age of Stupid

Set in 2055 in a world decimated by environmental disasters, The Age of Stupid stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist looking back at contemporary news clips to see the ways in which the world in the early years of the 21st Century ignored the warnings of impending doom.

The Age of Stupid has several problems. One is the condescending attitude which is supposed to be some sort of wake-up call. As someone concerned about the environment, even I was put off by the tone of the film. The biggest problem, however, is that the film tries to make its point by aggregating numerous short news clips that have nothing to do with one another giving the illusion of a pattern but with no real evidence that the various episodes actually add up to anything. Because the clips are so disparate, the film never allows the viewer to connect emotionally with any of the many individuals who pass through. In a market saturated with much better environmental films, The Age of Stupid is a high-concept film that really fails to deliver.
