Sin by Silence

Sin by Silence is a powerful film about women incarcerated for killing their abusive husbands and boyfriends. Sin by Silence balances harrowing stories of violence with optimism generated by these women forming an organization, Convicted Women Against Abuse, that has raised awareness about domestic abuse and has helped changed laws to allow stories of abuse to be allowed as evidence in murder trials. Many of these women were convicted to long prison terms without being able to admit testimony about their years of abuse. The film discusses the concept of Separation Assault, which refers to the increased danger to an abused woman’s life and well-being should she leave an abuser, adding a layer of complexity and a relevant context to their retaliation.

The film packs a lot of information and compelling interviews into its short running time (49 minutes).  All the interviews are moving and cover a range of domestic abuse issues.
