New Toy

I just bought an Asus Eee PC 900HA. I bought it from Amazon on Thursday and it arrived Friday without me paying for expedited shipping, so I am rather pleased with Amazon right now.

A friend of mine had me considering a Dell Mini, but the Asus is less expensive, has more storage, and was ready to ship. The last point was an important consideration because of the workshop I am giving in November in Chicago. I really didn’t want to lug a laptop around anymore.

So far, I quite like it. The keyboard will take some getting used to because of the size. The spacebar is short and I keep hitting the ALT key instead. I’ll need to work on my aim. It does not have a cd/dvd drive, so I spent some time this morning downloading tools. It comes with Microsoft Works which is a lot more robust than the last time I looked at it, but I still went with Open Office. Also downloaded Firefox 3. I haven’t taken the jump to 3 yet at work or on my home PC, so this will give me a chance to play around with it. Also did a little research for free anti-virus software and chose Avast. I never tried it before, so if anyone has any insights about it, I’d love to hear them.

  1. Thanks for the pics, it gives an nice idea of the size of this machine. I’m thinking about getting one, but with linux instead of Windows. How many USB ports does it have ? And did you tried the camera ? 0.3 MP ?? Is it any good ?

  2. 3 USB ports. Some of the specs I have seen list the webcam at 0.3MP and some at 1.3MP. Is it definitely 0.3?

  3. Now you must get yourself a wireless router for the house.

I know a couple of people who use Avast, and I’ve never heard a complaint.

  4. Jonathan and Bob,

Yes, 3 USB ports. And, yes, 0.3MP webcam. It seems fine for communication purposes. It’s a bit sensitive to light. I tired it outside and it was overexposed. It was fine inside.

  5. Now that you’ve had it for awhile, how are you liking it? I’m considering getting something like this, so would love to hear your feedback on it now that you’ve been using it awhile….?

  6. I am still very happy with the EEE. I especially like it for traveling. Being small, it has it’s limitations but nothing unexpected. The small screen would make it tough to do any kind of design work, but I find it’s fine for browsing the Internet and have even watched movies on a flight with it. I downloaded Open Office which runs fine.
